Local leaders are looking at starting a county-wide pilot recycling program if an application for a grant is received to pay for equipment for single-stream recyclable processing is successful.

Officials would like to establish a single-stream recycling center, which allows for all recylable items to be placed in one bin.

Officials from Carter County, Elizabethton and Watauga met Tuesday morning to review progress toward the start of the single-stream recycling center and to develop plans for the program.

A single-stream recycling center is one where all the recyclable items are placed in the same receptacle. The items are then taken to the center, where employees separate the different types of recyclable materials for processing.
