A small banner etched with a “W” now flutters over the once-flattened plants where, nearly a year ago, investigators found the bloody, lifeless body of 55-year-old Larry Whittaker.

Doreen “Dody” Whittaker stands in the front yard of her home on Reynolds Road, one year after her husband Larry Whittaker was shot multiple times and killed on Oct. 17, 2011. An arrest in the case was made last week.

It is there where the Carter County Sheriff’s Department began its investigation into the Oct. 17, 2011, death of the 55-year-old man. Originally, Israel Goudy claimed he killed Whittaker in self-defense, but all that changed Sept. 21 when authorities arrested Goudy, charging him with second-degree murder.

The ongoing investigation showed, officials said, not the late-night self-defense Goudy had claimed but, rather, a murder the 32-year-old attempted to cover up by stabbing himself four times to make it seem as if a struggle had ensued that fateful night.
